Inter went close to an immediate reply, Jimenez shaving the crossbar from a tight angle after Dida palmed clear a Cruz cross.

Chivu then had a free kick saved by Dida as the Nerazzurri battled hard for a leveller.

It came in the 36th, with the Nerazzurri temporarily down to ten men after losing Samuel to injury.

Julio Cruz received in the area from Cambiass and shrugged off a challenge from Seedorf before rifling past Dida for his fifth goal in as many games and twelfth of the season.

Milan made a bright start to the second period and went close through substitute Gilardino whose header from Maldini’s cross finished just wide.

Cambiasso secured the points on 63 minutes. He won the ball after a headed clearance from Cruz’ left-wing centre and beat Dida with a right-footed drive from 20 yards.

Reports suggested new boss Capello would attempt to persuade Carragher to come out of international retirement.

That talk intensified when it emerged England captain John Terry could possibly miss Capello’s first game in charge, a friendly against Switzerland at Wembley on 6 February.

The Chelsea centre-half broke three bones in his right foot during his side’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

Cagliari made a strong start and produced the first chance of the game on 7 minutes, Conti narrowly missing the target with a venomous angled shot.

Suazo, playing against his ex-team for the first time since the summer switch to Milan, drilled wide in the 9th minute.

The Rossoblu had a second chance in the 14th, Julio Cesar saving Acquafresca’s close-range effort from Fini’s cross.

In a first half of misses, Crespo fired wide after a storming run by Maicon, and Chivu smacked the bar with a superb long-range shot.

The Nerazzurri gradually imposed their game after the restart, and should have taken the lead ten minutes in when Suazo bundled wide after Marruocco failed to hold Chivu’s strike from distance.

Liverpool forged no clear-cut opportunities of their own, although two quickfire rare lapses from Edwin van der Sar in the first half twice saw United defenders forced into clearing the ball from their own goal line.

United’s first half display was all about sitting back and inviting Liverpool onto them. As hosts, and with a six point deficit to make up, the pressure was on Rafa Benitez’s side to make the early running.

Aside from a couple of early efforts from Sami Hyypia, there was little to concern United. Liverpool did force a couple of openings, but largely through uncharacteristic lapses from van der Sar.

The veteran Dutchman twice collided with his own defenders and failed to make contact with the ball, and each misjudgement ended with the ball being cleared off the line.

First Anderson had to parry away Kewell’s shot - from which Fernando Torres headed the rebound woefully wide - then two minutes later Patrice Evra slid in to clear the ball to safety as it rolled goalwards off the back of Rio Ferdinand.
