Mark Philipoussis has admitted his tennis career could be over after suffering another injury.
The former Wimbledon finalist injured his right knee during the Australian Open wildcard play-off tournament.
The 31-year-old will undergo a fourth operation and said: “I’m not thinking about a comeback at the moment.
“I want to have that surgery and then I just don’t want to be getting up sore and going to the gym and battling day after day.”
He added: “I’m just going to be thinking about spending time with my family, spending time at home and then assessing things - you know, where life will lead me and what direction I want to take in life and whether I’ll be going again.
“And I’ll be honest. It’s more a mental battle getting back from injury after injury.”
Philippoussis said he was prepared to consider retirement and added: “Of course I’m going to be sad but sooner or later you know it’s going to end and if it does, I’ve had amazing memories.
“Two of the biggest without a doubt have been the two Davis Cup wins.”
The Australian helped his country win the Cup in 1999 and 2003, which was also the year he lost to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final.
That was his second Grand Slam final following his defeat to compatriot Pat Rafter in the 1998 US Open.
He has won 11 ATP Tour titles in his career - the last coming in Newport, Rhode Island in July 2006.
Philippoussis, who missed nearly the whole of this year after his last operation, had hoped to return to action in next month’s Australian Open.
He had entered the wildcard play-off after failing to win a discretionary wildcard from the tournament organisers.
